A slice of baked milk tart being lifted out of a pie dish with a cake slice showing a golden-brown top and light cream inside.

My ‘ouma’ South African grandmother’s legendary milk tart. It is lip-smacking. The recipe is a real winner. It is a traditional South African tart that is very easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1 cups White sugar
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 cups Cake flour
  • 1 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 4 cups Milk
  • 1 tablespoons Cinnamon sugar

Method

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 190ºC (375ºF). Coat a 9-inch deep dish pie plate with vegetable oil cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. Add the egg yolks and beat until light and fluffy.
  4. Sift in the cake flour, baking powder and salt, and stir until well blended.
  5. Mix in the vanilla and milk.
  6. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites to stiff peaks using an electric mixer and fold into the batter.
  7. Pour into the prepared pie plate, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top.

Bake

  1. Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 165ºC (325ºF).
  2. Continue to bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the center is set when you gently jiggle the pie.
  3. Serve hot or cold but ideally allow to rest at room temperature until cold to allow to fully set.
